HRSA RCs’ Advocate Leaders Partnership Program

March 25, 2015

ACMG 2015 Teresa Nold The purpose of the HRSA Regional Genetics Collaboratives’ Advocate Leaders Partnership Program is to broaden consumer advocate leaders’ perspective of medical genetics.  Each Regional Collaborative identifies and sponsors Advocate Leaders to attend the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) and Genomics Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting, which is currently taking place on March 24-28, 2015 in Salt lake City, UT.  This is a great opportunity for the Advocate Leaders to meet with NCC and RC leaders, ACMG leadership, and medical genetics professionals while enjoying mentoring and personal ambassadorship of genetic counseling graduate students from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and the University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences.

The 2015 Heartland selected participant is Teresa Nold from Sioux Falls, SD.  Teresa is an outreach specialist at South Dakota Parent Connection and works with families with children with special health care needs, and many of them being genetic conditions.  She hopes “to become more knowledgeable of genetic conditions and practices in order to better advocate for [her] son as well as empower families.”  We are looking forward to hearing about her experience at the AMCG meeting in our next Advocate Work Group call.
