A Huge Thank You to Brittany Burnside!

We’re excited to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brittany Burnside for her contributions to the Heartland Regional Genetics Network's social media team this year. Brittany's engaging posts and impactful graphics have enhanced our online presence, spread awareness, and educated our communities.

Brittany also recently achieved a monumental milestone by defending her thesis, "Assessing the efficacy of best practices for obtaining culturally relevant and medically accurate pedigrees from Marshallese patients." Her thesis underscores her knowledge and deep commitment to improving patient care and fostering understanding within diverse communities - principles that lie at the heart of genetic counseling.

And there’s more - Brittany is graduating from The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Health Professions @uamschp with a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling this month!

Please join us in celebrating Brittany's remarkable journey! We are thrilled about her bright future and hope to stay in touch as she embarks on a new chapter of her life.

Congrats, Brittany!! Thank you for all your good work!

It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!

This year, we’re spotlighting the Marshallese, an integral part of the Heartland AAPI community.

We understand the challenges faced by many AAPI populations, especially in accessing genetic services. To better serve our Marshallese community, we have several resources specific to their needs:

*Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) in Marshallese
*Genetic Testing Toolkit and Tips for Treating Marshallese Patients for Providers
*Educational Videos in Marshallese

And…we’re excited to announce that we’re working hard to complete five animated genetics videos in Marshallese to assist families through the genetics process.

Join us in honoring the All AAPI communities and learn more about our programs and resources by visiting our website at www.heartlandcollaborative.org/.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) affects around 1 in 250 people, which makes it one of the most prevalent genetic conditions worldwide, but many do not know about this disease.

FH causes high cholesterol that is not easily removed from the body and deposits into arterial walls. This can increase the risk of heart complications and/or death. Thankfully, genetic testing and treatments are available to those with FH.

The Family Heart Foundation provides easy-to-read and comprehensive information about this condition, including finding a treatment specialist.
