Expanded carrier screening for reproductive risk assessment: An evidence-based practice guideline from the National Society of Genetic Counselors

Expanded carrier screening (ECS) helps healthy individuals screen for autosomal recessive and x-linked conditions that could impact the early life of a future child, thus affecting reproductive management. This screening is considered more equitable than ethnicity-based screening, which is not always comprehensive and can be hindered by self reporting or subjectivity. Per NSGC, “It should be offered to all who are currently pregnant, considering pregnancy, or might otherwise biologically contribute to pregnancy.” Read more in this February 2023 practice guideline.
